Unit 55 – P1
Radio Station: BBC
radio 2
a) Programme Type
|
This
station is on 24 hours a day, each show has a different theme for example Ken
Bruce has Linda Gray choosing music from Ken’s lifetime.
One show the is aired from 9:30-12 is Ken Bruce's show, Radio 2 tends to have a calmer atmosphere compared to radio one, Bruce's show tends to be about having people play songs form his years. Another radio 2 show is called 'Steve Wright in the afternoon' this is aired between 2pm and 5:05 pm this show usually features an interview or conversation with someone important or interesting, however the guests are usually not celebrities and tend to be lesser know doctors, authors, figure heads etc. From 6:30 am till 9:30 am the Chris Evans breakfast show is aired this show tends to be a little less formal than the other shows, Chris has his show this way to help people get up in the morning. |
b) Genre
|
The station uses a little bit of comedy to keep away from having everything too serious, although the comedy is limited and the show isn't shown as too lighthearted.
The news on the station tends to be a lot more serious than other stations, this means the news featured is informative on subjects such as major events or elections. |
c) Audience Profile
|
Radio
2 tends to have a older audience demographic as they like to play a lot more
older songs than other radio stations. I would say the target audience range would be between the ages 30 and 60.
|
d) Production
Process
|
Radio
2 has many presenters such as: Chris Evans, Jo Whiley and Ken Bruce. They
have a scheduling team that sort out the order of everything and the DJ’s
choose the music.

Unit 55 – P1
Radio Station: BBC radio Cambridge
a) Programme Type
|
This
station is exclusive to the Cambridge area, they tend to talk more about
Cambridge news and information about surrounding areas.
The day starts at 6am with the first show 'The Dotty McLeod breakfast show' this show tends to be more news based, as this is based around Cambridge in between songs they have different news segments including politics and sports. The show is very formal.
After the breakfast show the next show is called 'The big conversation with Paul Stainton' Paul's show continues with the formal and serious discussion however Paul allows listeners to contribute opinions to the discussions.
From 12-5 Lunchtime live is aired usually hosted by Jeremy Sallis Like the rest of the shows on this station its informative and serious, this segment is usually filled with a guest interview and music.
|
b) Genre
|
BBC radio Cambridge is predominantly news and factual, the show has a very serious tone and there aren't many jokes or light hearted comments made, this helps them reach the target audience of older people.
|
c) Audience Profile
|
BBC radio Cambridge seems like it has a older target range
than radio 1 because the station seems to be based around their news. The demographic
for this station is also confined to people who have an interest in Cambridge
news. The ideal target audience is limited to people that can afford a device to listen to the station with. The target age range for BBC radio Cambridge would be people aged around 25-35
|
d) Production
Process
|
BBC radio has two different types of producers, one is an audio and creative producer who gathers all sound to be used on the broadcast. The second type of producer is a content producer who plans and schedules for the broadcast. As this station mainly focuses on news there isn't much of a need for DJ's/ presenters. The station has an overall plan for each broadcast, this is called a running order. this is done by the content producer, the running order plans how long each section is and what it entails. The production process for the radio starts with the planning of the show this is usually done by the content producer, Then content producer will have a team of people that help with making important decisions on the timing on the broadcast. Once the show has been planned out it's up to the Audio and creative producer to gather any audio or sound effects that need to be used on the show. After this part of production is done the DJ/ Presenter and any other important crew members get ready to go live on radio and then the show begins. |

Unit 55 – P2
Radio station: Radio 1
Programme: Breakfast Show
Broadcast date: Monday 6th
of March 2017
a) Running order
|
Nick Grimshaw’s show starts at
6:33 every morning. The shows jingle starts playing introducing Nick.
He plays a preview of the songs
he’s going to be playing and he tells the listeners that a guest is going to
be coming in.
After he plays the preview he
plays 2 songs consecutively.
Once the two songs are over Nick
re-introduces the show and begins to read messages people have sent to him on
the show.
He continues to play a couple of
songs then breaks it up with more speech.
At 7 AM Tina Daheley starts
reading the news after this Nick tells the listeners about his guest/s he
will have coming he also lets listeners know there will be more news at 7:40.
At 7:40am more news is played
then nick starts to talk about celebrity news. Another presenter usually
joins him around this time.
At 8 am there is more news.
Around 9am he tells listeners
that after the songs he is about to play the guest will be on the show.
|
b) DJ’s/Presenters
|
The show is named after DJ Nick
Grimshaw and it’s an informal show that’s played early in the morning as
people are waking up and are traveling to work. Nick Grimshaw is 32 years old
who has been on various T.V shows like The X-factor. Nick Grimshaw’s style
helps give him the appearance he needs to get younger listeners, his clothing
is up to date and he follows trends, he occasionally has been known to wear
regular clothing with a twist this helps him stand out the most.
|
c) Content
|
Music is played throughout the
show but it is broken up with other segments.
Music: the music Nick plays is
current trending music to help keep people listening, he will occasionally
ask listeners to request songs, this helps him communicate with listeners.
News: the news on the breakfast
show is played about every hour or so, the news tends to be the top
headlines, On Nick’s show he usually talks about the latest celebrity news.
Contests: Nick tells listeners
about contests to win a range of prizes from electronics to event tickets.
The contests are usually quizzes he plays with listeners.
Callers: Like with the contests
Nick will have people call in and request songs or just have general conversation,
when people call in for the contests or to request songs Nick will ask for
feedback on the song choice after the song has played.
|
d) Target Audience
|
The BBC radio one breakfast show
tends to appeal to a younger audience typically people ranged around 18-30
years old, this is because the songs played tend to be popular with younger
listeners, The minimum age for target audience is around 18 because to play
any of the competitions or games on the show you have to be at least 18 years
old.

Title
|
Radio one breakfast show
|
|
Medium
|
The show is a radio
breakfast show that would be played on BBC radio one. The show would run from
6:33 am till 10 am.
|
|
Running Time
|
The show we are making
will be 5 minutes long, to meet this time restriction we are only going to
play around 20 seconds of the songs instead of the full lengths, the
interview we will have will also be brief so we can fit everything into the 5
minutes.
|
|
Synopsis
|
Charlie Brett as the main
DJ/ presenter will present the show; Kacper will be the news presenter. In
the 5 minutes there will be a short game where a caller has to answer a
celebrity question to win tickets for an upcoming movie.
There will also be someone
who will call in and talk with the presenter to request a song. Towards the
end of the 5 minutes we are going to have a celebrity guest come in and talk
with the presenter.
We have chosen all these
elements for the show as they are the most important elements and we can only
use important parts if we want to reach our 5-minute deadline.
|
|
Details of relevant content
|
One element we think
listeners would enjoy is the song choices, the songs we are choosing are
current songs that were recently released that people enjoy. We hope by using
some of the popular music people will want to listen to the show.
The celebrity guest
we choose will hopefully help bring in listeners, we are hoping to use a
popular celebrity like Ed Sheeran to talk about his new songs, as this would
instantly become interesting to any of his fans. .
The game could also
interest listeners as they may want a chance at winning a prize of some sort.
|
|
Suggestions for DJ/Presenters
|
The show is
light—hearted so the presenter/ DJ will have to be cheery and witty to keep
listeners interested. I think BBC radio 2's Chris Evans could achieve this as he is popular with fans of the station and he already has expert experience in radio presenting.
News- the news
presenter will need to have more of a serious tone to make the news seem like
its not a joke.

Relevant legal and/or ethical issues
The guidelines we followed are the OFCOM guidelines.
Ethical:
The ethical issues that we could face would be that everyone currently in the group is a white male, as well as the celebrities that are going to be interviewed. We haven’t covered all ethnicities and only covered the male gender therefore this could be an issue for some people.
Discrimination:
The radio show is family friendly and appropriate for young children as there will be no cussing and discrimination. We will have to gain permission from the artists to play their songs during our radio.
religion:
To ensure that our programme does not disrespect any religion or belief, we will have no reference to any religious subjects.
copyright & Privacy:
We do not have any advertising in our radio show edit. BBC does not use any adverts in their radio shows, this helps avoid any copyright for our edit.
Protecting the under eighteens:
Because this is BBC radio we will not have any content that is unsuitable for younger listeners. Also when taking in a caller we will make sure that they are at least 18 for them to be able to participate in a competition/quiz.
Unit 55 – P4
|
|
a) Setting up
appropriate equipment
|
As we were recording audio we used a zoom mic and a small tripod
to keep the microphone stable. When we got the microphone we tested to see
how good the quality was and to see if the room was quiet enough.
|
b) Following running
order and content plan
|
We used the running order, content plan and script to
record the audio in the correct order, this was helpful when it came to
editing as we were able to take the audio already in order rather than having
to re arrange the files.
|
c) Following
safe working practices
|
We made sure there were no hazards for any of the crew to
be hurt or equipment to be damaged, the bags for the equipment were put aside
so they didn’t get in the way of recording and risk any injury.
|
d) Following production process
|
We managed to follow our
production plan, we had planned for time to review our footage and re record
anything we needed and this worked well for us as we were in need of re
recoding because we scheduled for this time it didn’t put us behind in any
way and we were able to finish the edit by the deadline.
