4 stages of video game production:
Manufacturer: The manufacturer is the company that
make the hardware for games to be produced. A few examples of manufacturers are
Sony who makes PlayStation, Microsoft who makes products like Xbox and apple
who make products like the iPhone.
Developers: The developers are the company that
make the software. A couple of examples of developers are EA, Sony, Bungie,
Naughty dog and Capcom.
Publishers: this is the company that puts the
software onto the disks or online stores and distributes them an example of
these is Ubisoft, Square Enix and EA.
Retailers: The retailers are the people who
sell the game to players. An example of these could be GAME, CEX or PSN
(PlayStation Network).
1st party games: A first party game is when one
company manufactures, develops and publishes a game an example of this is The
Last Of Us it is manufactured and published by Sony but is developed by Naughty
Dog however naughty dog id owned by Sony so that means Sony have done all three
stages.
2nd party games: A second party game is when one
company works on two stages and a second company works on the other one. An
example of a second party game is Sunset Overdrive it is developed by Insomniac
but in Manufactured and published by Microsoft.
3rd party games: Third party games are when
different companies work on the three different stages. An example of a third
party game would be Destiny as Activision published it. It was developed by Bungie
and manufactured by Sony and Microsoft.
